A Word from Benchmade on the Bailout in Ranger Green with Tanto Edge
Sometimes if you want the best explanation of a new product, it is best to go straight to the source. So, this is exactly what Benchmade has to say about their new Bailout:
“Now more EDC friendly than ever, the 537BK-06 Bailout® makes the jump into your daily carry rotation without sacrificing toughness and durability. Maintaining its tactical hard-use prowess with a piercing tanto blade, this slim and easily pocketable folder features ultralight Grivory® handle scales with highly textured grip zones in our top-selling ranger green hue, CPM-S30V blade steel with a Cerakote® graphite black finish for superb edge qualities and corrosion resistance, black oxide hardware, and an aluminum lanyard pommel minus the glass breaker for personalized carry options.”
What’s the Upsell? What’s the Elevator Pitch?
If you’re staring at this knife wondering why you should buy this one in the sea of knives that Benchmade has to offer to us, there are 4 key points that Benchmade wants to drive home to consumers and knife enthusiasts.
- Blade Style: Tanto – This shape is easily identified by the angular lines. The knife edge is flat and transitions with a hard break in the angle from the tip to the primary edge.
- Blade Steel: CPM-S30V Stainless Steel (58-60HRC) – First-of-its-kind steel designed specifically for use in knife blades. An excellent balance of edge retention, corrosion resistance, and durability for a variety of applications.
- Handle: Grivory – Glass-filled thermoplastic composite known for being extremely light and durable. Widely used for automotive, industrial, and aerospace applications.
- Opening Action: Axis Lock – Manually opened knives must be opened 100% from the closed position to the open position by the user.
Field Use – Benchmade Bailout in Ranger Green with Tanto Edge
So, how does the Benchmade Bailout perform out in the field?… There is a lot to like about this knife and I’ll walk my way through it with my experiences. I appreciated the lanyard loop because you can not only secure it down to backpacks and other various items, but that blunt metal end could used for pummeling and self-defense as well. I also liked that all of the hardware is a Torx bit (as God intended). So, if you want to disassemble your knife to clean it or self-service it, you reliably can without the fear of things stripping out.
The Grivory handle is something that is new to me and my initial impressions were this feels kind of weird… I don’t know how I feel about this.. but over time, it grew on me. The Grivory material is deeply textured giving you good command of the handle and knife in general. Also, this glass-filled thermoplastic might look like an economical route to go for a handle, but it is actually quite durable and robust.
The ambidextrous nature and reversible pocket clip are a nice touch as well. Not because Benchmade is looking to necessarily cater to lefties; rather, it simply gives you more options of what pocket you want to carry, if you want to do a dominant hand draw, crossdraw, etc. It simply gives you more options.
Next, you have that iconic and recognizable tanto blade. I like it because you can do more precise cuts with it if you are making tinder for a fire or carving something. Simultaneously, if you feel compelled to baton some wood for larger chunks for a bonfire, this knife is strong enough to take that kind of abuse as well.
And while everybody loves a spring-assist or full-auto knife, I have come to have more respect for manual folding knives the older I get. They feel more purposeful, mature, and methodical (that’s definitely my age talking). So, I really appreciated the AXIS® Lock opening mechanism that Benchmade deploys for this knife.
Final Thoughts
So, what are my final thoughts on the Benchmade Bailout in a Ranger Green Grivory handle with a Tanto blade?… Overall, I believe this knife brings a lot of value to the table. Simplistic in appearance, yes, but it also delivers a tremendous amount of utility while being affordable. For some people, $200 might not sounds affordable, but it honestly is when premium knives can quickly and easily exceed $1,000+ in some cases. Anything south of $200 – that feels and performs like a much more expensive knife – is a winner in my book. Just like the Bailout we reviewed here today.
