Astral V-Eight Fisher PFD: OHUB Review

One of the most overlooked pieces of fishing gear is a high-quality PFD, which is crazy because your life could depend on it one day. I’m always searching for a comfortable and safe kayak fishing life jacket, and my search led me to the Astral V-Eight Fisher PFD. After six months of using it, I’ll spill the good, bad, and ugly in this Astral V-Eight Fisher PFD review so you can know if it’s worth purchasing.

Intended Use (Rating: 9/10)

The Astral V-Eight Fisher is a USCG Type III PFD designed for fishing, touring, and recreation in warm climates. Its design focuses on ventilation, mobility, and comfort, and I’ve found it to excel in all these areas.

I was introduced to the Astral V-Eight Fisher PFD at the Paddlesports Trade Coalition Colab in Oklahoma City, OK. I instantly respected what Astral stood for and was striving to do in the paddling community. Astral aims to make high-quality outdoor gear (PFDs, shoes, and clothing) with minimal environmental impact. While that sounds great, it’s a formidable goal that most companies fall short of. They either produce environmentally friendly gear that’s not high-quality or vice versa. However, that hasn’t been my experience with Astral products they sent me, including the V-Eight Fisher PFD.

Fit and Comfort (Rating: 9/10)

The V-Eight Fisher premium fit comes from pre-shaped foam in the front and back to ensure an excellent fit for men and women. It’s designed to fit you, especially when perfectly adjusted with the velcro straps. I’m a massive fan of the velcro straps because they keep them from flopping all over the place while paddling, casting, and reeling in fish. I also appreciate the high mesh back because I can comfortably relax against my kayak seat to paddle or fish, without the PFD putting me in an awkward position.

Mobility and Bulk (Rating: 8/10)

Astral did an excellent job of taking the bulk out of this lifejacket. It has yet to interfere with my paddling or fishing. I don’t feel too restricted to swim, paddle, or fish while wearing it, which means I wear it more often than not.

Breathability and Materials (Rating: 9/10)

The Airescape Airflow System keeps me cool in the heat because it allows the air to circulate through the PFD, instead of getting trapped and making me sweat while fishing on those muggy Oklahoma days.

Storage and Attachment Points (Rating: 8/10)

This PFD was designed for fishing and has large pockets, an external folding knife pocket, a pliers holster, and a clipping point for line nips and retractors. I love that it’s not too bulky in the front because my rod’s butt doesn’t catch on it while fighting fish or casting, yet it has plenty of quick access storage and attachment points.

Safety and Visibility (Rating: 7/10)

The most important aspect of a PFD is if it keeps you above water, and the V-Eight Fisher does that. I don’t hesitate to take it to my local whitewater park with Class 2-3 rapids or jump in the lake on a hot day to cool off.

However, it’s not the most visible lifejacket. I would like to see more color options. I’m not naturally flamboyant, nor do I typically wear flashy clothing, but I make an exception when kayak fishing. I prefer a bright PFD to be seen better since kayaks (and floating people) are challenging to see on the water. The V-Eight Fisher is offered in two colors (Pebble Gray and Storm Navy) that blend into the water too well for boaters to see. I remedy this by wearing a bright hat and shirt and installing a safety orange flag on my kayak. A handy strap on the back allows for a flasher or reflective tape to be attached.

Durability and Construction (Rating: 8/10)

Astral uses durable materials like YKK zippers and 420 x 220 denier ripstop nylon to ensure this PFD will last you for years. Mine rides in the back of my truck when not in use and shows no signs of wear and tear.

Value for Money (Rating: 8/10)

Astral is a leading PFD brand. They’ve been in the kayaking space for many years and continue to make high-quality gear trusted by fishing guides, professional kayakers, and everyday kayak anglers like you and me.

The V-Eight Fisher doesn’t disappoint. It is ridiculously comfortable, keeps me above water, and is expertly designed for fishing. However, it’s costly because Astral has invested lots of thought, design, and technology into it. At $150, it is comparable to other high-end kayak fishing PFDs like the NRS Chinook.

Overall Rating: 8.25/10

After thoroughly testing the Astral V-Eight Fisher PFD for the last 6+ months, I can confidently say it’s durable, comfortable, and most importantly, will help keep you safer while on the water. But that’s only if you wear it.
