As temperatures rise in Cabo, the fishing continues to improve dramatically. My friend Arturo Chacon of Tag Cabo Sportfishing recently reached out with an update on the conditions he’s seeing, and honestly, his report has me counting down the days until my July trip when I’ll get to experience this phenomenal fishing firsthand with Arturo.
Chacon said June’s warming waters have transformed Cabo into an angler’s paradise, with multiple species firing on all cylinders and providing the kind of action that makes summer trips to Los Cabos absolutely unforgettable. “Now we’re talking full-blown summer vibes,” Chacon said. “Mornings are warm, sea temps hitting 78-80°F, and everything is lit up.”
Explosive Wahoo Action
The headline story this summer has been the absolutely incredible wahoo bite that’s taken over Cabo’s waters. “Wahoo bite exploded. I’m serious: we had days where over 20 solid wahoo were caught around the Gordo Banks and 1150,” Chacon said. The action has been so consistent that it’s become the primary target for many charter operations.

The quality of these fish has been exceptional, with Chacon reporting some true monsters being landed. “One boat pulled in an 83 lb monster, hit a Nomad plug and took off like a rocket,” he said. For anglers seeking that screaming reel and blistering run that wahoo are famous for, Chacon’s assessment is clear: “If I were to tell you to fly in this week for one reason, this would be it.”
Striped Marlin Remain Active
While wahoo may be stealing the spotlight, striped marlin continue to provide excellent opportunities for bill fishing enthusiasts. “Striped marlin were still very active, though a bit picky mid-day,” Chacon noted. The key to success has been timing and location, with early mornings proving most productive along with targeting areas where bait balls are concentrated.
Dorado Consistency
Adding to the offshore excitement, Mahi Mahi have maintained their presence in Cabo’s summer waters. “Dorado stayed consistent: another bonus when you’re pulling lures for marlin or wahoo,” Chacon said. This multi-species action means anglers can target several trophy fish species on a single trip, making every day on the water an adventure.

Yellowfin Potential Building
While the yellowfin tuna bite hasn’t reached its full potential yet, there are promising signs on the horizon. Chacon reported another significant catch with a “100 lb yellowfin caught near Vinorama, but the tuna bite still hasn’t fired wide open. Most of the tuna we’re seeing are small and way offshore.” However, he remains optimistic about the developing conditions: “It’s coming; we just need a little more warm water to fill in.”
Inshore Roosterfish Bonanza
For anglers who prefer staying closer to shore, the inshore action has been nothing short of spectacular. “That roosterfish bite is insane,” Chacon said. “One panga released 15+ roosters in one morning between La Bocana and the Lighthouse. Not all monsters, but they were stacked in there.” This kind of consistent roosterfish action represents some of the best inshore fishing Cabo has to offer, providing exciting battles on lighter tackle.

Bottom Fishing Opportunities
While the bottom bite has slowed slightly from peak conditions, opportunities still exist for anglers targeting table fare. “Bottom fishing slowed just a bit compared to the week before, but there are still grouper and amberjack to be found—especially early mornings,” Chacon explained. Success requires dedication and timing, as “you just gotta work for ’em and beat the current.”
Additionally, snappers have been active along the rocky structure. “Snappers have been biting along the rocky points—great table fish if you want a fillet,” Chacon noted, providing excellent options for anglers looking to bring home some of Cabo’s finest eating fish.
Looking Ahead
The current summer conditions in Cabo San Lucas represent some of the most exciting fishing opportunities of the year. With wahoo action at explosive levels, consistent marlin and dorado fishing, incredible inshore roosterfish numbers, and building yellowfin potential, summer 2025 is shaping up to be one for the books.
For those planning a summer getaway to escape the heat and get into some world-class fishing, the period from June through August offers incredible opportunities. Whether you’re an experienced angler looking for trophy wahoo and marlin or a family seeking exciting inshore action with roosters and snappers, Cabo’s summer fishing scene has something for every angler.
I know I’m counting down the days until my July trip with Arturo; this kind of fishing action is exactly why Cabo remains one of the world’s premier sportfishing destinations.
