For 2025, Magellan Outdoors is partnering with the Coastal Conservation Association again, putting money into the Building Conservation Trust—and helping to celebrate wildlife art while they’re at it. That means for this year, they’ve got fishing-friendly clothes for sale with the design work done by outdoors artists, including Florida-based KC Scott this year. This clothing is all in a very reasonable price range – $25-$30ish – so you aren’t just helping out the conservationists’ pocketbooks, you’re also helping your own wallet, as this stuff is far more affordable than a lot of the overpriced fancy-pants fishing clothing that’s on the market.

This spring, Magellan sent me a box with four of their new shirts in the lineup. This included a collared, short-sleeved button-up shirt, with a pattern that verges on Hawaiian, but isn’t quite that bold. Whether that works for you, or doesn’t, I’ll leave up to your judgment.

Of all the shirts they sent, this Laguna Madre button-down (as it’s officially listed on their website) was the coolest-wearing, for sure; the short sleeves obviously made the biggest difference here, but the flap at the back moved plenty of air through the shirt. The polyester taslon fabric is moisture-wicking, and lined with mesh in some places to promote airflow. This would be my choice if I was out for a hot day on a boat; it comes with built-in UV protection from the sun, but since the SPF isn’t listed on their website you might want to protect yourself with some sunblock as well. It looks like Academy is clearing them out, and I would buy more if I didn’t have a full closet already.

Magellan also sent three hoodie-style shirts, including a white one with a print of a redfish. Of these three shirts, this was by far my favorite. While I wouldn’t normally pick white clothes for fishing due to my general tendency to get grease and fish guts over my apparel, I will say that the synthetic material has held up well over the summer, without the stinky smell that man-made fabrics often get.

They also sent a compression-style Casting Crew hoodie. This was incredibly comfortable, and was my go-to for several fishing trips this year. Polyester fabric with wicking property and UPF protection kept me cool and sunburn-free on some scorching hot days; when one stream fishing trip turned into an unwanted bath (more than once, thanks to super-slippery rocks that day), the quick-drying synthetic was very welcome. I will say that I wasn’t sure of the artist-drawn pattern, but it wasn’t terrible—it just kind of looked like a pool liner. But in the backwoods, nobody cared.

The third hoodie-style shirt was a Series Star shirt that also carried an artist-created pattern. I, uh, was not a big fan of the pattern, and took considerable ribbing from my fishing buddies over it. I was a big fan of the comfort of this gaiter-style hoodie, though; it was the perfect shirt for layering under another sweatshirt on early mornings up at Island Lake fishing camp, then wearing on its own when the sun was blazing down from the sky mid-day, layering up again at last light when it was time to troll big bomber flies.
Conclusion – Magellan Outdoors x Coastal Conservation Association Shirt
None of these shirts are expensive. Some looked good; opinions were mixed on the aesthetics of the patterns of others, but they all were super-comfortable and appeared to be every bit as well-made as the pricey stuff you’d get from much bigger-name outdoors manufacturers.
