What’s in the Box? NEW Ravin R470 Crossbow
One of the most basic yet important questions we get asked while reviewing products is, “what’s in the box?” This can have a bearing on whether we need to buy additional accessories with a certain purchase, or if we have everything we need already to hit the woods or the range. This is everything that you can come to expect from purchasing a new Ravin R470 XK7 crossbow:
- VersaDrive Cocking System
- Anti-Dry Fire/Auto Safety
- Built-in Sling Mounts
- 3X Ravin .003 R500 Series Arrows & Field Points (400 Grain Total)
- 1X Removable Draw Handle
- 1X Quiver/Mounting Bracket
- All new 100-yard illuminated Speed Lock scope
What’s the Upsell? Why Should you Buy the NEW Ravin R470?
If you were stuck in an unfortunate archery elevator with me, what would be my elevator pitch for the Ravin R470 XK7? What’s the upsell to buying one of these versus models from their competitors? For me, it boils down to several elements: accuracy, compactness, and speed. Some of the more technical elements that help achieve this are stated below from Ravin:
- HEXCOIL CAM SYSTEM – A proprietary system rotates cams an incredible 300 degrees, reforming traditional crossbows into the fastest, most accurate and compact designs ever seen.
- VERSADRIVE™ COCKING SYSTEM – One of the revolutionary design advantages provided by HexCoil technology is the VersaDrive Cocking System. Working in conjunction with the Trac-Trigger Firing System this ultra-compact fully integrated cocking mechanism is built into the sleek stock design. Featuring a minimal 17 pounds of cocking force the VersaDrive Cocking System is ambidextrous and has the ability to cock and un-cock your Ravin crossbow. This unique HexCoil advantage provides an easy to use, fully integrated cocking mechanism delivering unmatched accuracy with every shot.
- TRAC-TRIGGER™ FIRING SYSTEM – A patented built-in trigger mechanism that slides forward on the rail and clasps directly to the precise center of the string every time the bow is drawn, allowing for straight-line nock travel. This unique HexCoil advantage creates a perfectly balanced draw for unmatched down range accuracy with every shot.
- FRICTIONLESS™ FLIGHT SYSTEM – This patented technology allows the arrow and string to free float above the rail, eliminating friction for consistent accuracy and increased string and cable life. This unique HexCoil advantage delivers astounding target accuracy with every shot.
First Impressions
One of my first impressions of this new Ravin R470 XK7 is that I appreciate that you receive a scope with this package. While I am extremely well-versed in optics for rifles, handguns, and shotguns, the scopes that outfit crossbows still are not intuitive to me. So, eliminating the possibility to make a mistake in that department is much appreciated.
All Ravin XK7 crossbows – except those in Sniper packages – come with a 100-Yard Illuminated Crossbow Scope with Ravin’s all-new Speed Lock. This locking ring gives hunters confidence that the scope will remain dialed in when it’s time to pull the trigger. Some of the features of this scope that comes with the crossbow include:
- 30 – 100 Yard Reticles
- Red & Green Illumination
- Fogproof, Shockproof, and Waterproof
- Fully Coated Lenses
- New Speed Lock feature lets you lock-in your FPS (Feet per Second) Adjustment for next-level confidence in your shot
Field-Use and Shooting the Ravin R470
So, how did this crossbow perform out in the field and on the shooting range?… I have shot several Ravin crossbows over the years, and have always been impressed by all of the products that they put out, including the R470 XK7 we are testing here today.
As a package, it is fairly light and quite wieldy when out in the field. If you have to carry this crossbow for extended distances of periods of time, it is definitely doable. I wouldn’t want to be on an all-day stalking hunt for several miles (with any crossbow), but if you have to walk 1/4 mile to a full mile to your designated hunting spot, you could still make an off-hand shot once you got there and not be too fatigued.
The other really neat aspect about the Ravin R470 XK7 is the Kings XK7 camouflage pattern. It has blends and tones of vibrant greens to even patches of white. While everything is currently lush in the woods where I live, it still blended in well. In fact, I could see this camouflage pattern being a “chameleon” and blending in all fall and even into the winter months. It is quite unique and surprised me by how well it works in multiple environments.
Stay one more step ahead of your quarry with apex Ravin accuracy, incredible power, and the killer tech of Kings’ XK7 camo. Inspired by the natural colors and terrains of North American environments, XK7 unites seven abstract shapes and textures to provide you with ultimate concealment, no matter the distance.
The camo might conflict with some of the camo clothing I already own, but it breaks up a hunter’s silhouette nicely in foliage still giving you an element of surprise while hunting.
Looking back to the factory-included optic that was mentioned on our First Impressions, I was impressed for what I perceived to be an affordable scope to have such clear glass during the low light hours of dusk and dawn.
I found the trigger to be as smooth as any Ravin crossbow I shot in the past, which is nice because during that “moment of truth” when you might launch a bolt at a whitetail deer or other game animal, you don’t want to jerk the trigger and ruin a potential opportunity. Those moments are gone as fast as they arrive.
In regards to accuracy, this crossbow is as accurate as one could hope. I never shot clustered groups at the same bullseye out of fear that I’d Robinhood a bolt in the target (bolts are expensive). So, when I’d repeatedly be shooting one bolt at a time at different targets, I always found myself in the bullseye as long as I did my part.
Final Thoughts
So, what are my final thoughts on the new Ravin R470 Crossbow in its XK7 Kings camouflage colorway?… Overall, I was nothing short of impressed once again. I started this review stating this, and I’ll say it again: Ravin is the gold standard in crossbows. From the weight, feel, speed, accuracy, and even the camouflage pattern they partnered with Kings Camo on, it all comes together as a phenomenal package for hunting. If you’re contemplating jumping in on one of the new Ravin R470 Crossbow in its XK7 Kings camouflage colorway, you won’t be disappointed. In fact, you’ll love it!
In closing, I want to say thank you to Ravin for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their NEW Ravin R470 Crossbow in its XK7 Kings camouflage colorway.
