I’ll admit I was hesitant when I requested the 5.11 Murdoc Jacket for review. The timing was terrible – right as summer was hitting Minnesota – and honestly, the style wasn’t really my typical aesthetic. But after a few months of ownership and several weeks of actually wearing it during our recent cooler weather, I’m pleasantly surprised by what 5.11 delivered.

At $98 MSRP, it sits in the higher end of casual jackets, but 5.11 runs sales frequently, so you can often find it for less. The price is justified by the construction quality and features. You could find similar-looking jackets on Amazon for half the price, but they’ll probably fall apart within a year. This feels like it’ll last decades with normal wear. For the build quality, versatility, and 5.11’s reputation for durability, the price point makes sense.
“The Murdoc Jacket strikes a unique balance between the style of a casual jacket, the design of a tanker jacket, and the utility of a work jacket. While we lined it with some cool patterns, don’t let that make you think this won’t be as cozy, comfortable, and warm as a blanket. The ribbed collar, waistband, and cuffs cap off the classic look, as does the selection of timeless colors. Looks just as good in the cockpit as it would a night on the town.”

First Impressions and Fit: 5.11 Tactical Murdoc Jacket
Right off the bat, the build quality impressed me. The cotton twill has a nice feel and texture – no cheap stitching strain or loose threads that you’d expect from budget jackets. Everything feels solid from the first time you handle it.

The fit surprised me, too. I was worried about the styling, but it actually looks sharp and fits well without being obnoxiously tight. Several people complimented the look, which caught me off guard. The regular fit strikes the right balance – relaxed enough to be comfortable and conceal carry friendly, but not baggy.
Out & About: 5.11 Tactical Murdoc Jacket
Since getting it in late spring, I’ve had to wait for cooler weather to really put it through its paces. The last couple weeks in Minnesota have been perfect for testing – those chilly mornings and cooler days where you need something more than a t-shirt but less than a heavy jacket.

The temperature range is subjective since I tend to run hot, but this is ideal for late spring and early fall conditions. I’d say it’s most comfortable in that 50-65 degree range, though it can work in the 70s if it’s not sunny and you’re not doing anything active. Beyond that, it gets uncomfortable from a heat standpoint.

The pocket setup is well thought out. I mainly used the inside chest pocket for my wallet and the main hand pockets for everyday carry items. The hidden zipper pockets next to the main center zip are a nice touch for securing smaller items, but I never found a use for them. You probably won’t use all the pockets, but having the options is better than needing them and not having them.

This feels like a jacket you’ll buy once and use for years. The 100% cotton construction feels substantial, and the peached finish gives it a refined texture. The rib knit collar, cuffs, and waistband should hold their shape over time. No signs of weak points or areas that’ll fail prematurely. The zippers feel solid, the stitching is even, and nothing feels like it’s going to come apart with regular use.

Final Thoughts: 5.11 Tactical Murdoc Jacket
The Murdoc Jacket won me over despite my initial reservations about the style. It’s comfortable, well-made, and more versatile than I expected. The fit is spot-on, the construction is solid, and it works for both casual and more professional settings.

If you’re looking for a reliable light jacket for those in-between weather days, the Murdoc delivers. It’s the kind of piece you’ll reach for regularly once you have it, and given the build quality, it should serve you well for many seasons to come. The Murdoc proves that 5.11 can do more than just tactical gear – they can make everyday apparel that works without screaming “operator” from across the room.

In closing, I want to say thank you to 5.11 Tactical for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their Murdoc Jacket. That is greatly appreciated.
