AllOutdoor Review: Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18×50 SFP Duplex with Green Dot

Trijicon is a tenured optics manufacturer that is primarily known for their battle or military optics: the venerable ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight), RMR (Ruggedized Miniature Reflex), and even the MGRS (Machine Gun Reflex Sight). What shooters fail to remember is that Trijicon also crafts outstanding rifle hunting optics as well. The Credo, Tenmile, Huron, and Ascent are all popular lines, but the most storied and popular is likely the AccuPoint series. Boasting a lit central dot without the need of batteries, it is a game-changer for hunters who truly subject their gear to the elements. So, today we are going to review the Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot that I have had across multiple rifles and even a Texas Aoudad hunt over the past 3 months. Let’s dive in!

What’s in the Box?

One of the most common and recurring questions I receive reviewing firearms is, “What’s in the box?” Meaning, what do you all get with your purchase. This is important because what you do and do not get will dictate what type of accessories you need to additionally buy depending on what you want your end-product or weapon system to look like. All this being said, this is everything that you will receive:

  • AccuPoint 3-18x50mm Riflescope
  • Tenebraex Flip Caps
  • Scopecoat™
  • 3mm Hex Key
  • 1.5mm Hex Key
  • Repositionable Magnification Knob and Replacement Screw
  • Quick Reference Guide
  • Warranty Card
  • Vinyl Logo Sticker

What’s the Upsell? What’s the 30 Second Elevator Pitch?

So, what is the upsell to the Trijicon AccuPoint? What is the metaphorical and literal elevator pitch for this riflescope? For one, it touts crisp, precise, and generous windage and elevation adjustment. You also have proven reticle designs, and a diopter that accommodates the shooter’s individual eyesight and/or deficiencies. Plus, with a ruggedized design engineered to withstand extreme conditions, it has been tested to military standards and protocols – far and above what us hunters may ever need in the way of durability. Here are some additional points that Trijicon would like you to know about as well:

  • CONFIDENT AIMING IN ANY LIGHT – Battery-free, illuminated reticles are “always on” using tritium/fiber optic technology to automatically adjust to lighting conditions.
  • EDGE-TO-EDGE CLARITY – Fully multi-coated, broadband, anti-reflective glass provides excellent light transmission, true detail and color with zero distortion.
  • “BOTH-EYES-OPEN” SHOOTING – Illuminated reticles use Trijicon’s Bindon Aiming Concept® (BAC) feature to provide a clear aiming point that draws the shooter’s eye for fast engagement.

Reticle Subtensions – Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot

An important aspect of any riflescope that you are going to take into the field to go hunting are your reticle and its subtensions (the hashmarks or stadia lines, and what they mean). Once my chosen rifle – a Springfield Armory Model 2020 Boundary in 7mm PRC – and optic were properly married together, the first thing that is typically tested out at the range are the reticle subtensions. When we look at optics and their reticles in a retail store we make the assumption that if a manufacturer states their subtensions – or the little hashes on a reticle – equal a specific increment like 1 MOA (Minute of Angle), that they do. It would be wonderful if that were true, but unfortunately, it is not true for all scope manufacturers. So, to test that, if you know the “size” of that subtension or stadia line and what it should be in your reticle when looking at them, you can simply look at them at a known size target (one inch squares on paper, etc). If everything matches up like its supposed, you’re good to go! That was exactly the case with the Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex.

Tracking – Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot

The next test to ensure this optic is up to par is to verify it “tracks” correctly. What is meant by this is if you make an adjustment – either windage or elevation – by clicking a fixed amount on your turrets, that should actually pan out on paper. You never want to adjust your elevation, say 3 MOA, and then an optic does not respond accordingly.

So, to test the tracking I shot a confirmation 5-shot group at 100 yards. Then, I adjusted 5 MOA of elevation up and 5 MOA of windage to the right. Next, I shot a second 5-shot group. Finally, I adjusted back to my original spot by moving 5 MOA of elevation down and 5 MOA of windage to the left. A 3rd and final 5-shot group were sent down range. After wandering down to my target to verify, the scope gave me all of the correct adjustment because I ended up exactly where I had started. It passed the test. I can also state that over the last 3 months, whenever I shot with the Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex, the scope always responded accordingly.

Parallax – Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot

The next test I put the Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex through was to verify its parallax. The parallax of any scope is a very misunderstood property. Most people tend to believe your parallax knob (if any scope offers one) is there to make your image clear. This is an extremely rudimentary way of expressing what your parallax actually accomplishes.

The parallax of any scope is meant to get your reticle and the object you are looking at on the same focal plane. When this is achieved, yes, your image will look more clear, but once again that is an overly simplistic explanation for what is going on. Most parallax knobs will have yardage markers to indicate at what revolution point on the knob you should hopefully hit that “sweet spot” of your reticle and target being on the same focal plane. While the numbers are not always perfect, its a good baseline.

To test your parallax, you can simply look at objects at varying distances, spin your parallax knob to the appropriate distance you are looking at, and if your image becomes crystal clear like one would hope – TA DA! – your parallax is working perfectly. This was, once again, the case for this optic we are testing here today.

Watching Aoudad at 1.5 miles on the side of a mesa near dusk

Range Experience – Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot

Throughout the entire process of sighting in my rifle for the ensuing Texas Aoudad hunt, I used Hornady ammunition, which they provided for this review and hunt. So, a tremendous thanks to them for helping out with ammunition. I’ll take a moment to hype them up because all of the ammo I shot was incredibly accurate, fed flawlessly, and other members of my hunting party had the same remarks to say. Hornady ammunition, especially their Precision Hunter line, has been a go-to for me for awhile now. I am a reloader, but with a busy life and ammunition this consistent and accurate, I’d rather be lazy and simply grab a box of this stuff off of the shelf any day of the week.

Less than a 1/2″ group at 100 yards while sighting in

Another thing I accomplished before my hunt was establishing a D.O.P.E. card (Data on Previous Engagement) in the GeoBallistics app. Then, when I would be out in the field hunting, I could more confidently engage animals at distance without the worry of missing or injuring game.

Texas Aoudad Hunt – Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot

This optic had already proven its worth in glass clarity, functioning, and the ability to lay down impressive groups on paper. Now, the last metric to test was how it would perform out in the field on a live hunt. So, I was invited down to southwest Texas by Trijicon for a guided Aoudad hunt, which I am tremendously grateful for. Wildlife Systems, Inc. was to be our guide service, and my specific guide was Clayton Kibbe.

After landing in Texas and making the journey to where we would be staying for our week of hunting, we began our hunt immediately by going out and glassing for Aoudad the first night. This was a unique part of Texas where there were vast areas of flatland as well as croppings of buttes, mesas, and plateaus that dotted the horizon. So, we would be searching for Aoudad to be coming down off of these areas of elevation during the day, and returning to them at night. Being diurnal animals – they only move during the day and sleep at night, like humans – even if we could find some at dusk, there would be hope to relocate them in the exact same spot the next day.

AllOutdoor Review: Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50 SFP Duplex with Green Dot

On the 1st night of hunting, we saw no Aoudad, but there was plenty of wildlife to entertain us. We saw monster mule deer bucks, several herds of elk, and curious livestock. It made for a lot of game to glass through the Trijicon AccuPoint and I could easily, positively identify everything that we encountered.

AllOutdoor Review: Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50 SFP Duplex with Green Dot

On the second day of hunting we spent a full day, minus lunch, once again searching for some elusive Aoudad. We encountered all kinds of wildlife, including antelope, more livestock, oodles of elk, and even some javelina.

AllOutdoor Review: Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50 SFP Duplex with Green Dot

It wasn’t until the last hour of daylight on day two that we finally found some good Aoudad. The first encounter was a little bachelor group of rams. They weren’t quite the size we were hoping for. So, my guide told me we should let ’em grow. I was a bit disappointed – because I was chompin’ at the bit to shoot an Aoudad – but he was right.

AllOutdoor Review: Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50 SFP Duplex with Green Dot

My angst to shoot an Aoudad was short-lived though because Clayton spied a herd of 20+ Aoudad on the side of a mesa at last shooting light. This herd was well over a mile away and it truly took a keen eye to spot them. Knowing that these Aoudad would likely bed there for the night and not move until tomorrow morning (being diurnal), we both had renewed hope I could slam a monster Aoudad. We “put them to bed” – watching them until it got dark out – again, in hopes they’d be there tomorrow morning.

AllOutdoor Review: Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50 SFP Duplex with Green Dot

The next day we set out looking to find our same Aoudad herd with the extra company of Seth Swerczek from Hornady. He was an amazing individual to have along for the hunt because we not only were shooting Hornady ammunition, but I was toting along a 7mm PRC, which he personally had a hand in inventing!

At dawn, we were able to find the same herd we put to bed the night before. So, we got out of our truck and began a roughly 1,200 yard stalk towards the herd on the side of a mesa. While there was cover for us to make an attempt to be sneaky, the foliage of juniper bushes on the landscape was still sparce. We had grave concerns that moving from one juniper bush to another, sometimes 50 yards apart, wasn’t enough cover and we’d be busted before a shot was ever attempted.

AllOutdoor Review: Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50 SFP Duplex with Green Dot

Nevertheless, we continued our stalk to within 340 yards. That was the last bush between us and the herd. So, we set down our packs and began gameplanning a shot up the side of the mesa. I had my D.O.P.E. card done on GeoBallistics saved to my phone, but missed several data points that Seth pointed out. So, him and I respectfully challenged each other’s DOPE against each other (he made one on the fly that was better than mine) as I prepared for my shot. Since I would be shooting prone, uphill, and off of a backpack, Clayton pointed out that I should shoot in the shadow of the juniper bush – I would need to step out from the bush to shoot, in general, but his experience advised me to not be out in the sun where the 20+ Aoudad could more easily spot me. Sage advice from a good guide.

So, my moment of truth came. Laying down prone off of my hunting pack, I adjusted my parallax so everything was clear… I setup in the shade… made an elevation adjustment with Seth’s guidance on DOPE… and I waited for my chosen ram to clear the herd. This took 2 minutes, which felt like 2 hours in the heat of the moment. Once he finally cleared, I got the green light from Clayton and Seth to make the shot. Soft trigger press… stable shooting position… good math… better gun… great ammo… awesome optic… If I missed this shot, it’s assuredly my fault…

WHACK!

I let off my 1st shot and dropped my Aoudad in his place straight through both front shoulders as I was told to do. Clayton, Seth, and I all cheered a couple celebratory cuss words and were jacked! It was a good shot, but an Aoudad’s drive and will to live is like none other. Another shot would need to be taken. I cycled my bolt, picked up my Aoudad in my scope again, and…

WHACK!

This time he was done. A clean double-lung/heart shot that swiftly and humanely put down my Aoudad. Now we were raucous amongst ourselves! A 3-day hunt comes to a close with a long stalk and a very difficult shot in hindsight that was made easy with good data, coaching, tools, and phenomenal optic in the Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot.

Final Thoughts – Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot

So, what are my final thoughts on the Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot riflescope?… Overall, this riflescope did everything I ever asked of it. Exceptional glass clarity, lots of adjustment for long shots, easy to use, easy to calculate and adjust for DOPE, the central green dot was useful on a long shot as a reference point. It exceled in every aspect that I tested it. The only point of constructive criticism I can come up with is the price of $1,996, but I’ll even chide myself in that regard. Having shot innumerable scopes over the years, you can “get what you pay for” and you should just “buy once, cry once.” There are a lot of one-liners that come to mind, but if you want something of tremendous quality, you simply need to invest in it. This is no different. I absolutely recommend this scope to anyone who is in need of an awesome optic for hunting.

In closing, I want to say thank you to Trijicon for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot riflescope. That is greatly appreciated. Also, we would like to know what all of you guys and gals think? Do you believe that the Trijicon AccuPoint 3-18x50mm SFP Duplex with Green Dot riflescope is something worth spending your money on? Would you get one and take it on your next hunt? As always, let us know all of your thoughts in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.
