5.11 Tactical Chimera Reversible Vest

AllOutdoor Review: 5.11 Tactical Chimera Reversible Vest

I’ll be honest with you,  I’ve never really been a vest guy. The whole concept has always seemed a little off to me. If it’s cold enough for a vest, why wouldn’t I just wear a jacket? That said, 5.11 was very kind to send over their Chimera Reversible Vest, I figured now was as good a time as any to see if this category had something to offer. Two sides, twelve pockets, and PrimaLoft insulation? Alright, I’ll bite.

“The Chimera Reversible Vest flips the script on everyday wear with full-time function and all-condition warmth. One side’s all-business utility. The other’s slick, low-profile grit. Zip it up, flip it over, and get after it. The Chimera doubles down through the chill.”

First Impressions: 5.11 Chimera Reversible Vest

I grabbed the Large in Duck Brown, which I think is the best-looking “do all” sort of colorway for this piece. Out of the packaging, the first thing I noticed was how genuinely reversible this thing is. Some “reversible” garments feel like an afterthought on one side, not the Chimera

Chimera

Both sides feel intentional and complete. One side has that traditional puffy vest look you’d expect from an insulated layer, clean lines, and understated. Flip it over, and you get something that reads more like a fishing vest or a tactical piece with visible pocket flaps and more utility-forward styling.

Chimera

The fit ran true to size on me, though I will say it sits a little bigger and poofier than I typically prefer, so I would be tempted to try the size below. It wasn’t uncomfortable by any means and didn’t require any adjustments. It sat on my shoulders naturally and moved well. Just be aware that if you’re between sizes or like a more fitted look, you might want to size down.

Field Testing: 5.11 Chimera Reversible Vest

This is where my skepticism of vests in general kind of held true, but not through any fault of the Chimera itself. I wore this vest on several occasions including one day where temps dipped into the single digits… I  live in MN, it’s a blast. Here’s the thing: it’s not super warm. I know that sounds counterintuitive for an insulated vest with PrimaLoft Gold, but I found myself wearing it over a sweatshirt or heavier base layer anyway. The insulation takes the edge off and keeps your core comfortable, but this isn’t the piece you’re grabbing if you need serious warmth.

That said, layered appropriately, it handled the cold just fine. The single-digit day was perfectly manageable with the right underlayers. I think where this vest shines is in those transitional temps where a full jacket is overkill but a hoodie alone leaves you a little chilly.

Chimera

I did actually flip and use both sides throughout my testing, which surprised me. The utility side, with its more visible pockets, was great for days when I needed quick access to items and didn’t care about looking a little more “tactical.” The puffy side cleaned up nicely for running errands or grabbing lunch. I could see, with extended use, one side becoming the “never touch” option for some people depending on their lifestyle, but I genuinely got use out of both.

Speaking of pockets, there are twelve of them, and they’re all legitimately useful. The hidden pockets on both sides are deep enough to actually hold items securely (like a carry gun), and the zippered document pockets on the main side are perfect for a phone or wallet. I did not carry concealed in this vest, but I can absolutely see how the hidden utility pockets would work well for that purpose. The pass-through opening on the main side would give you quick access to an IWB holster underneath without much fuss.

Chimera

No quirks to report. Zippers ran smoothly and never caught on the fabric. Nothing felt cheap or poorly assembled. The PrimaLoft insulation doesn’t bunch or migrate after wearing, and the whole thing holds its shape well.

Final Thoughts: 5.11 Chimera Reversible Vest

Did the Chimera convert me into a vest guy? Not entirely. I still think I’d reach for a jacket nine times out of ten in cold weather. But this vest makes a solid case for itself in those specific scenarios where full sleeves are too much and layering makes sense. The fact that it genuinely works as two different vests depending on which side you’re rocking adds real value here. You’re essentially getting two looks and two pocket configurations in one purchase.

Chimera

If you’re already a vest person or you work in an environment where layering is key, the Chimera is worth a serious look. It’s well made, comfortable, and more versatile than most vests I’ve come across.

Chimera

In closing, I want to say thank you to 5.11 Tactical for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their Chimera Reversible Vest. That is greatly appreciated. Also, we would like to know what all of you guys and gals think? Do you believe that the Chimera is worth spending your money on? Would you rock both sides or just stick to one? Let us know all of your thoughts in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.
