5.11 Tactical Rambler 6″ Boots

AllOutdoor Review: 5.11 Tactical Rambler 6″ Boots

I’ve been wearing the 5.11 Rambler 6″ boots off and on for a couple weeks now, including a full weekend camping trip where they got absolutely soaked. That weekend turned into the real test – rain all weekend, muddy trails, and long days on my feet. If these boots were going to show their weaknesses, that was going to be the time. Let’s dive in and see if the shoe (boot) fits!

5.11 Tactical Coverage on AllOutdoor:

Specifications: 5.11 Tactical Rambler 6″ Boot

The Rambler 6″ is 5.11’s take on a professional-grade work boot designed for long days on your feet. They’ve built it with an Ortholite insole, ASTM slip and oil-resistant outsole, 5.11 Force Foam heel cushioning, and outsole stitching for added durability. The full-grain leather upper should handle abuse, while the 6-inch height gives solid ankle support.

  • Material: Full-grain leather upper
  • Height: 6 inches
  • Insole: Ortholite
  • Outsole: ASTM slip and oil-resistant with 5.11 Force Foam heel cushioning
  • Construction: Outsole stitching for added durability
  • Sizes: 4-15 (Regular and Wide available)
  • Colors: Dark Earth (these), Coyote

The MSRP of $155 puts these in the middle range for work quality boots. You’re not paying premium prices, but you’re not getting budget construction either. 5.11 positions these as professional-grade boots for people who are on their feet all day, and the price reflects that target market.

“Solid traction is mandatory when the action keeps you on your toes, and the Rambler 6″ boot easily fulfills that mission. Our Rambler 6″ is engineered for professional-grade performance and lasting durability. The outer sole surpasses ASTM slip-resistance standards to keep you moving safely across challenging terrain and slick surfaces. The good looks of the full-grain, dark earth upper with heavy-duty outsole stitching matches the rugged build. An Ortholite® insole and 5.11 Force Foam® heel cushioning silence those barking dogs. When you must be on your feet for hours on end, there’s no better partner than the Rambler 6″.”

First Look: 5.11 Tactical Rambler 6″ Boot

Right out of the box, these look sharp. The leather is genuine and soft; it doesn’t feel fake. The color is lighter than I usually go for, but I can tell they’ll darken up with age and wear. 5.11 includes an extra set of black laces if you want to swap out the tan ones, which is a nice touch. I was tempted to make the switch immediately, but decided to stick with the tan.

The construction looks solid. The stitching is clean, the leather feels substantial, and the sole attachment looks like it’ll hold up to abuse. The wide heel loop makes them easy to get on, especially with bigger fingers, and the tongue is easy to grasp when you’re lacing up. The tread/sole is pretty thick and sort of makes you feel like you are wearing Frankenstein boots a bit, but you get used to it very fast.

Out & About: 5.11 Tactical Rambler 6″ Boot

Here’s where things got interesting with the fit. I wear a size 12, and usually boots run tight on me. These ran loose, noticeably loose. After that wet weekend camping, they got even looser. There was too much space above my toes, enough that I could wiggle them around quite a bit. That’s unnerving when you want to feel secure in your boots. The looseness became more obvious during long periods of wear. While they were comfortable for walking around, I was ready to take them off after a full day. They just didn’t feel as secure as I like my boots to feel. If I were buying, I’d go a half size down.

The ankle support is solid, though. The laces cinch down tight and give good support at the 6-inch height. Traction was fine during that wet weekend. No slipping issues on muddy trails or wet surfaces. The ASTM slip-resistant sole did its job. After getting completely soaked all weekend, they held up fine. No issues with stitching or construction coming apart. The leather handled the water without problems, though, like I said, they did stretch out some.

I wish there were a bit more cushioning underfoot. The Ortholite insole and Force Foam heel help, but for long days, I could use more padding. Compared to other 5.11 boots I’ve worn, these definitely fit looser than usual.

Final Thoughts: 5.11 Tactical Rambler 6″ Boot

The Rambler 6″ is a solid work boot that handles abuse well. The leather quality is good, the construction is sound, and they’ll take a beating without falling apart. The problem is the fit, at least for me. They run loose compared to other 5.11 boots, and that looseness gets worse with wear and moisture.

Rambler 6

Would I recommend them? 100%, but size down a half size from what you normally wear. The quality is there for the price point, and if you get the fit right, they should serve you well. 5.11 continues to make practical gear that works, even if the sizing on these is a bit off from their usual standard. The $155 price is fair for what you get: genuine leather, solid construction, and features that matter for people who work in boots. Just make sure you try them on first or be prepared to exchange for a smaller size.

Rambler 6

In closing, I want to say thank you to 5.11 Tactical for allowing AllOutdoor and myself the opportunity to try out their Rambler 6″ Boot. That is greatly appreciated. Also, we would like to know what all of you guys and gals think? Do you believe that this work boot is worth spending your money on? Would you take these out on your next job site or adventure? Would this be your go-to pair of boots? Let us know all of your thoughts in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.
