When I told my grandpa that Abu Garcia had sent me the Revo X baitcast combo to test and review, his eyes lit up because he has enjoyed using Abu Garcia products for many decades. I’ve used several inexpensive Walmart special Abu Garcia combos, which gave me lower expectations for this Abu Garcia Revo X Baitcast Combo review. Still, I headed to the water with the Revo X combo to see if it might surprise me, given its rave reviews from other anglers.

What It’s Made For
I received the Revo X 7-foot 4-inch medium-heavy, moderate-action rod. It’s a do-all bass fishing rod capable of handling ½ oz to 1 ⅜ oz lures on 10 to 20-pound line. I’ve used it while bank fishing at my pond, while kayak fishing at a small lake, and in the river to catch largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and white bass.
First Impressions
Abu Garcia always does a good job of matching the color scheme of their combos, and the Revo X Baitcaster is no different. The rod and reel perfectly match, like they were designed to be paired (because they were). The EVA handles are comfortable, and the Gen5 Revo X low-profile reel fits nicely in my hand.
Build Quality
- Rod: 30-Ton IntraCarbon graphite blank, stainless steel guides with Zirconium inserts, and EVA split grip handle.
- Reel: C6 Carbon frame and sideplate, MagTrax brake system, Carbon Matrix drag system, Duragear Gen II gear system, and 90mm aluminum handle with oversized knobs.
Overall, I’m impressed with the quality of the rod and reel. I haven’t owned it long enough to determine the long-term durability, but I suspect I’ll use this combo for many years. I love that the reel seat gives you direct access to the blank so you can feel every rock and branch you bump into, and of course, a light bite.

Balance & Comfort
After using this combo on several trips over the last few months, I can say it’s a bit tip-heavy with the reel in my hand. However, it’s not particularly noticeable once I fully grip the rod, and it remains comfortable even after many hours of casting.
I love the EVA split-grip foam handle because the rod stays securely in my hand, even when wet. It’s also the perfect diameter; it doesn’t feel too bulky or too thin.

Casting & Line Management
I had problems casting my old, inexpensive Abu Garcia Black Max combos very far without backlashing, so I had pretty low expectations for the Revo X. However, I launched the first cast nearly across my ¼-acre pond with little effort, using a small 3/16-oz spinnerbait.
To make sure it wasn’t a fluke (not the lure), I tied on a few other lures and experienced the same results, with the wind at my back. Determined to test this combo thoroughly, I walked to the other side of the pond and began casting into the wind—same result, long casts, with minimal backlash. I had no backlash once I dialed in the spool tension for each lure.
Not only does it cast like a dream, but it also reels incredibly smoothly when using a variety of lures. It blew my expectations out of the water, figuratively speaking.

Sensitivity & Feedback
When throwing a squarebill crankbait, I could easily tell when it was vibrating as it was supposed to and when I made contact with a clump of grass or a rock. The same is true when I was using the spinnerbait. I could count the rocks I hit and even felt the subtle bite of a crappie.
With this combo, I’m confident you’ll feel subtle bites and reel in those fish.

Power, Drag, & Fighting Performance
I haven’t caught any drag-stripping monsters with the Revo X combo, but the 2-pound bass that I’ve reeled in were no match. The drag is smooth, and the rod is plenty strong to boat flip those 2 to 3-pounders all day.

Versatility
If I were forced to use only one combo, this would be it because it handles a wide variety of lures. While it’s not ideal for all lures (jigs and 4/0 and bigger hooks), it’s an excellent choice for crankbaits, spinnerbaits, bladed-jigs, and other moving baits. The moderate action makes it a little more difficult to get a good hook set while using a jig, but it’s not impossible.
This combo is quickly becoming my go-to for many applications, and I won’t hesitate to make it my workhorse on each trip.

Value & Price Point
I’ve used combos half this price that weren’t half as good, and combos twice this price that weren’t twice as good. The Abu Garcia Revo X baitcaster combo is spot on with its price point. In my experience, it’s been well worth the money. Most bass anglers will get their money’s worth out of it, especially those who love throwing moving baits as much as I do.

Field Notes
The Abu Garcia Revo X baitcast combo has raised my expectations for how a quality combo should perform. I love that it’s high-quality without breaking the bank (though it’s not a cheap combo). I struggled to find anything negative with this setup, except that it was a little tip-heavy. It casts well and is fun to use for catching fish. What more can you ask for?

- Best For: Intermediate to experienced bank anglers, boat anglers, and kayak anglers (beginner anglers will likely want to spend less to test the waters)
- Avoid If: Looking for a jig rod for punching, flipping, and pitching.
