With the summer heat really turning up here in Maine right now, I figured this would be a great time to review one of my favorite new shorts I have been testing out recently, the Proof Equator Hybrid Shorts. I’m always looking for a good do-it-all short for summer activities that I can wear on a hike, at the lake, or even going out with friends, and if you’re anything like me, I think you might like these shorts just as much as I do.
Clothing Coverage on AllOutdoor
The Proof Equator Hybrid Shorts were provided by Huckberry for this review and while I am allowed to keep them after the conclusion of this review, this will not change my opinion on any of their current or future products. Proof and Huckberry have not been allowed to preview this article prior to its publication. I have been rocking these shorts for the last 5 months and have taken them on fishing trips, hikes and on a few trips to places like Nashville TN, and Portland ME.
Lightweight Design
From the moment I slipped on the Proof Equator Hybrid Shorts, their lightweight feel stood out. Crafted from 100% polyester fabric with a four-way stretch, they’re soft, airy, and move with me effortlessly. Whether I’m lunging during a workout or climbing over rocks on a trail, the stretch ensures I’m never restricted. The fabric also breathes well, keeping me cool even on sweaty summer days. At just 5 inches in inseam length, they strike a balance between sporty and practical, offering enough coverage while still showing off my pasty white legs. The shorts are designed for active days outdoors, and they deliver on that promise. I’ve worn them hiking, swimming, and even just strolling around town, and they adapt to each scenario and look surprisingly nice being dressed up or down. The lightweight construction makes them easy to pack, and they don’t wrinkle, which is a bonus for travel.
Key Features in Action
Let’s dive into the specific features that make these shorts stand out. The polyester fabric is the backbone of these shorts. It’s not just lightweight, it’s engineered to stretch in all directions, which I noticed when I was scrambling up a steep incline. There’s no pinching or pulling, just smooth movement. The breathability is a lifesaver, too. During a humid hike, I stayed comfortable while my friends in heavier shorts were counting the minutes until we got back in the cool car.
The durable water-repellent (DWR) treatment adds a layer of practicality you don’t find in many shorts. I brushed against muddy branches on a trail, and the dirt wiped off easily with no stains left behind. When I took a dip in a lake, the shorts shed water quickly, though they didn’t dry as fast as dedicated swimwear. The DWR helps them dry faster than untreated fabrics, but after heavy exposure, like a downpour, I noticed it took a bit longer than I’d hoped. Still, it’s a solid feature for light water encounters.
The concealed zippered pocket is a small but pretty useful detail. Tucked discreetly into the design, it’s perfect for stashing my keys or a card when I’m out and about. I felt confident jogging with my essentials secure, with no jingling or worry about losing them. It’s not huge, so don’t expect to fit a bulky phone, but for small valuables, it does its job quite well.
The mesh pocket bags are a feature that help these shorts shine in the water, and out. After swimming, the water drained out fast, and the pockets didn’t stay soggy. I also liked how they added breathability on dry land. During a hot day of urban exploration, my hands didn’t feel trapped in stuffy pockets. They’re simple but effective.
The internal drawcord waistband is all about comfort and control. I could cinch it just right for a snug fit without needing a belt, which was great for active movement—no slipping down mid-hike. The tailored fit already flatters, but the drawcord makes it adjustable for different body types or bloating after a big lunch.
Versatility
These shorts are billed as versatile, and they live up to it. On a hike, the stretch and breathability kept me going, while the DWR and mesh pockets handled a sudden rain. In the city, their sleek design paired well with a casual shirt, and the zippered pocket kept my wallet safe. At the beach, they transitioned from lounging to swimming without missing a beat. They’re not perfect for everything—don’t expect them to replace heavy-duty cargo shorts that can store a lot of heavier items, but for a lightweight, do-most-things option, they’re hard to beat.

Final Thoughts
The Proof Equator Hybrid Shorts have earned a spot in my wardrobe for the summer months. At $98, they’re a premium pick and pretty hard on the wallet. They’re not the toughest or quickest-drying shorts out there, but their versatility and comfort make them a reliable companion for outdoor adventures and classy evening dinners at that Italian restaurant your wife keeps begging you to visit. If you’re after a pair of shorts that blends function with a sleek look and have some coin to drop, these ones are a great option!
