Anderson Bought by Ruger | OHUB News

In a way, the industry was heading in this direction. During 2020 and the subsequent years, the industry ramped up and expanded to meet growing demand. However, that investment lacked foresight. Unfortunately, the bubble was always going to burst. Maybe the years after the COVID-19 pandemic blinded manufacturers to history. This has happened before. The industry saw a surge around the events of Sandy Hook. ARs and high-capacity magazines disappeared from stores. Demand could not be met. But then the 2016 election. Everyone felt safe. And the bubble burst. The same thing happened again.

Anderson Sells

Anderson MFG is known for supplying affordable yet quality AR-15 parts, accessories, and complete builds. They are the go-to for many hobbyist gunsmiths looking to create yet another AR-15. However, that market hit a wall. While people might still be buying, the margins have reduced. For a company offering budget-friendly components, high volume is necessary to offset lower profits.

Gun University, an online hub for firearm reviews and educational content, listed the largest gun manufacturers by volume in the United States. Anderson MFG ranked ninth on that list, producing 337,658 firearms last year, yet 308,566 of those are categorized as “misc,” indicating they are likely lower receivers. While Anderson does a lot of OEM work for others in the industry, it isn’t enough to offset its declining profits.

Ruger Buys

On that same list, Ruger was listed in the #1 spot. The firearm giant expands its production capacity by acquiring Anderson. Todd Seyfer, President and CEO of Ruger, stated:

“This acquisition is an incredible opportunity to advance our long-term strategy and expand Ruger’s capacity. We’re excited to welcome members from the talented team at Anderson Manufacturing and leverage their knowledge and infrastructure to better serve our customers. This move reinforces Ruger’s position as a leader in the industry, and reiterates my focus on continued growth, even as others scale back.”

Ruger will not continue the Anderson MFG brand or its products. Everything will shift to Ruger as it looks to expand its capabilities and increase production of presumably the Marlin line. What this means for current industry partners is unclear.

Zooming Out

We are in an era where company acquisitions are becoming common, however, as profits decline and the industry adjusts to a new normal, tough decisions will be made. It’s unfortunate that a trusted brand like Anderson has fallen into this pattern.
