Coast FL97R: Rechargeable Power Meets Voice Activation

Coast FL97R: Rechargeable Power Meets Voice Activation

I’ve tested a lot of headlamps over the years on trails, at camp, under truck hoods, and flat on my back in the driveway chasing bolts that inevitably roll just out of reach. The Coast FL97R is one of the more unique models I’ve put to use recently, largely because of its voice control feature.

I’ve been using the FL97R for hands-on automotive work and general outdoor tasks over the past several weeks. Most notably, I relied on it while replacing the water pump and timing belt on my truck in my driveway, so I was constantly on the ground, rotating between undercarriage work and leaning into the engine bay. I also used it during nighttime grilling sessions outside and to chase my dogs around.

Specs & Features

  • Max Output: 1250 lumens (Turbo)
  • Beam Distance: Up to 225 meters
  • Max Runtime: Up to 15 hours (mode dependent)
  • Modes: Low / Medium / High / Turbo
  • Additional Beams: ARC 180°, Red, Green
  • Color Temperatures: Warm and Cool white
  • Focusing System: PURE BEAM with GLIDE FOCUS™ (flood-to-spot control)
  • Battery: COAST ZX350 rechargeable battery or 3 × AAA
  • Charging: USB-C
  • Rating: IP54 (water- and dust-resistant)
  • Weight: 4.21 oz

The standout feature here is the dedicated voice activation button located on the bottom of the housing. Once enabled, you can use simple commands to turn the light on and off—no touching required.

Beam Pattern & Brightness

This beam is powerful. It is noticeably brighter than many mid-range headlamps I’ve used.

While replacing the water pump and timing belt, I needed both wide illumination for situational awareness and focused light when lining up bolt holes or checking gasket surfaces. The flood pattern provided excellent wide coverage under the truck, and the spot beam gave me clean, focused light when I needed to see detail inside the engine bay.

Even while grilling hamburgers outside at night, the wide beam made it easy to monitor multiple patties without constantly repositioning myself.

The brightness is adjustable and consistent across modes. Turbo mode is seriously bright, almost overkill for close-up work, but fantastic when scanning across a dark driveway or backyard to see what the dogs may be barking at (typically nothing).

In total darkness, visibility is excellent. The beam is wide enough that you don’t get that tunnel-vision effect some headlamps create.

I also enjoyed the utility light this model comes with. It has a high and low setting, which makes it great for when the power of the sun isn’t needed. This could have great use when having a spontaneous caving adventure and you need to switch between multiple settings depending on how active the bats might be that day.

Rating: 9 / 10

Comfort & Fit

The strap is comfortable and adjustable without feeling bulky. I wore it for extended periods while working under the truck, sometimes for over an hour at a time. No hot spots. No forehead pressure. No sliding down when I looked downward or turned my head side to side.

The weight is balanced well, and the pivoting head angle with 3 different angles is extremely helpful. Being able to adjust the tilt while lying on my back made a big difference because I didn’t have to crane my neck just to direct the beam properly.

It fits comfortably over a bare head or a ball cap, and I didn’t experience any slipping.

Rating: 8.5 / 10

Controls & Ease of Use

Sitting right on top of the headlamp, the physical buttons are easy to feel and intuitive to use.

But the real game-changer is the voice activation.

When your hands are greasy from engine work, or you’re holding a spatula over a hot grill, being able to simply say a command to turn the light on or off is incredibly convenient. The voice control worked consistently with simple commands and didn’t require shouting or exaggerated phrasing. It even heard me over loud music and while a compressor was running.

The bottom-positioned voice control button is easy to find and activate. There did seem to be some lag time from when the voice control was activated to when it could “hear” me, but this was something a little patience easily fixed.

Rating: 9.5 / 10

Battery Life & Charging

With mixed use of cycling between high and medium modes, I found the battery life to be solid. I didn’t drain it during a full evening of driveway mechanical work, and it easily handled the switch to nighttime grilling afterward.

Charging is quick via USB-C, which is a big plus. I appreciate not having to deal with proprietary cables.

I didn’t have a need to swap in disposable batteries since I was able to place the headlamp to charge after I used it, but this is a great option for when you might not have access to electricity. The battery pack is easily revealed by lifting the two tabs on the bottom and the rechargeable battery comes out easy for you to put 3 AAA batteries in.

Rating: 9 / 10

Durability & Weather Resistance

While I didn’t submerge it or drop it off a ladder, it handled driveway grit, dust, and incidental contact without issue. The charging port does have a water resistant cover and the battery cover has a seal around it, which tracks for the IP54 rating. I may have dropped this headlamp on the ground from a standing position, but there was no damage and it continued to work great.

The housing feels solid and the pivot mechanism stays in place when adjusted.

With an IP54 rating, it’s built to handle rain and dust, though it’s not a full waterproof submersible unit. For automotive work, camping, grilling, and general outdoor use, it’s more than adequate.

Rating: 8 / 10

Versatility & Use Cases

This is where the FL97R really shines.

It transitions easily between:

  • Automotive repairs
  • Camping and campsite setup
  • Night grilling
  • Emergency roadside use
  • Hunting prep
  • Caving

The wide beam is excellent for close-range tasks, and the high-lumen turbo mode gives you long-distance capability when needed.

For those who split time between outdoor recreation and hands-on projects—whether that’s working on your own vehicle, maintaining gear, or handling camp setup solo—this headlamp genuinely makes things easier.

The voice control is not gimmicky. It’s functional.

Rating: 9 / 10

Value & Competition

The FL97R sits in the upper mid-range price bracket for rechargeable headlamps.

Compared to similarly bright models without voice control, it holds strong. Compared to premium trail-running headlamps, it’s heavier, but also more work-oriented and feature-rich.

If voice control matters to you or if you regularly work with dirty hands this model stands apart from many competitors.

Would I buy it again? Heck yes!

Rating: 10 / 10

Overall Rating

The Coast FL97R is a practical, powerful, and thoughtfully designed headlamp that goes beyond basic trail lighting. The voice activation feature is genuinely useful when your hands are full or covered in grease.

For those who handle their own vehicle repairs, manage camp solo, or simply want dependable hands-free lighting, this is a capable tool worth considering.

It’s not ultralight for competitive runners, and it’s not fully waterproof, but for real-world outdoor and work scenarios, it performs extremely well.

Overall Rating: 9.5 / 10
