The Palm Beach County Board of Commissioners is doing their final vote on Big Sugar’s proposal for the Southland Water Resource Project, this Thursday, May 22nd, at the Palm Beach County Governmental Center. This is the last chance to make a stand for protecting the Everglades and the future of South Florida’s water, both fresh and salt. The “Southland Rock Mine” is a planned massive rock mine in the Everglades Agricultural Area, which is disguised as a water storage project under the name of the Southland Water Resource Project. So, for those in the area, please come out this Thursday, May 22nd, to the Palm Beach County Governmental Building and join the effort with Captains for Clean Water to help tell the County Commission to say No to the Southland Water Resource Project.
The Everglades is the largest wetland ecosystem in the United States and one of the largest in the world. This is an incredibly biodiverse ecosystem that is loaded with endemic species, which helps protect the waters around South Florida from nutrient overload. Historically, this “river of grass” stretched from the headwaters of the Kissimmee River down into Lake Okeechobee and kept going down into what is now Everglades National Park. Now, the Everglades are half their historical size and have been cut off from Lake Okeechobee

If you aren’t in the Palm Beach County area or aren’t able to show up in person, but still want to help protect the Everglades and waters of South Florida. You can still be involved by sending an email through Captains for Clean Water to the Palm Beach County commissioners, urging them to reject this proposal. They have drafted an email for the commissioners that you just have to add your name to and click send to send a message to the county telling them to say no to the Southland Rock Mine Proposal and why this red-flag-filled proposal should not pass.
