Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have serial 48487, one of only two known factory “Double Action” gripped First Generation Colt SAAs. Shipped to William Crapo June 10, 1878, this features a modified grip frame with checkered rosewood grips styled after the Model 1877, and backstrap inscribed “Mountaineer.”
The factory letter lists special order “stocks same as the Double Action” and a silver front sight 1/8 inch higher than standard. Consecutive serial 48486 is the only other known example. The Wilkersons’ official Colt record notes these used “modified Model 1877 grip frames.” Though similar to the recently-introduced Model 1877, these aren’t identical. These 1878 examples are the only known factory double-action gripped First Generation SAAs.
The “Mountaineer” inscription points to William Crapo of Cerro Gordo, California – mountaineer, miner, and postmaster. In 1878, Crapo guided four women climbing Mount Whitney, including Anna Mills. He wanted “to have the honor of leading the first party of ladies to the top of the United States.” Mills was injured before the final camp but completed the ascent. Crapo later helped name nearby Mount Mills in her honor.
Newspapers note Crapo claimed to be first to ascend Mount Whitney. In 1880, he was appointed Cerro Gordo postmaster. On December 30, 1892, Crapo shot and killed H.B. Boland and seriously wounded John Thomas over an election dispute. Crapo disappeared and was never captured. He was a Civil War veteran wounded at Antietam while serving in Company G, 21st New York Infantry.
