Hoggson’s dense acanthus scrollwork and the distinctive bird nestled in leaves on the left side frame are nearly identical to patterns found on his “triple presentation” Henry rifles. The large flower bloom engraved on the barrel breech matches designs seen on forward frame panels of deluxe Henrys.
This cross-pollination of designs wasn’t coincidental—both T.J. Stafford’s firm and New Haven Arms Company operated in New Haven, Connecticut, making Hoggson a natural choice for local gunmakers seeking exhibition-quality engraving. The derringer represents a rare opportunity to see Hoggson’s techniques scaled down to an intimate canvas. T.J. Stafford produced only an estimated 2,100 single-shot derringers total, making any example scarce. The nickel and gold finish, paired with smooth pearl grips and German silver blade front sight, creates a presentation that’s both functional and beautiful.
