More than just marketing success, this .44 rimfire lever-action became the weapon that put serious firepower in everyone’s hands across the American West—settlers, outlaws, lawmen, and Native American warriors all carried them. The Model 1866 fixed the 1860 Henry rifle’s biggest problem. Winchester added a loading gate and wooden forearm while keeping the rapid-fire advantage that made repeating rifles so deadly. The Henry required loading from the muzzle end like some kind of fancy musket. The 1866’s side gate let shooters top off the magazine without exposing themselves to enemy fire.
This carbine leveled the battlefield between different forces fighting over western territory. Native American warriors figured out the 1866’s superiority over single-shot weapons fast and grabbed them through trade, capture, or straight purchase. The shorter carbine length worked perfectly for mounted combat—devastating firepower while staying mobile on horseback. The bitter irony peaked at Little Bighorn in 1876. Some Lakota and Cheyenne warriors carried repeating Winchesters while Custer’s 7th Cavalry stuck with single-shot Springfield carbines.
