Come out this Thursday, May 22nd, to the Palm Beach County Governmental Building and join up with Captains for Clean Water to help tell the County Commission to say No to the Southland Water Resource Project. Disguised as a water storage project, this is a massive rock mine by Big Sugar in the Everglades Agricultural Area, it butts up against the Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir. A reservoir that Big Sugar recently lost a 2021 lawsuit against the Army Corps, over concerns that Big Sugar was being deprived of water that they felt they owned. This “water storage” project proposal has no plans for water treatment infrastructure and is a threat to any restoration efforts, and could potentially cause more toxic water discharges into South Florida waters. The Everglades is the largest wetland in the US, and one of the largest in the world. Historically, this “river of grass” stretched from the headwaters of the Kissimmee River down into Lake Okeechobee and kept going down into what is now Everglades National Park. Now, the Everglades are half their historical size and have been cut off from Lake Okeechobee, no longer receiving enough clean fresh water to thrive.

Captains for Clean Water has already drafted an email for anyone who wants to help protect the future of the Everglades and South Florida’s waters. All you have to do is add your name and click send to send a message to the county to let them know why the Southland Water Resource Project is full of red flags and should not be allowed to come to fruition.
- It’s a rock mine disguised as a restoration reservoir, with zero treatment infrastructure to clean the water before it’s sent south through the Everglades.
- It threatens the structural integrity and overall effectiveness of the Everglades Reservoir, a critical nearby restoration project designed to reduce toxic coastal discharges.
- It sets a dangerous precedent that opens the door for more rock mines in the area, favoring industry profits over Florida’s clean water and restoration future.
