AllOutdoor 1-Year Review: Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

In 2025, Yeti is one of the biggest brands not only in coolers but also in the outdoor space. I went over to their website and took a look at all the different things they offer, and was blown away by the variety of gear they now offer. Everything from Outdoor Firepits to a French press for your coffee. While all of these items are cool, it’s still their first product that I think most people would associate them with, the cooler, and that’s exactly what I’ll be looking at in this review. I reached out to the folks at Yeti last Summer, and they were kind enough to hook me up with a Tundra 45 Hard Cooler for this review, which I might add is long overdue.

AllOutdoor 1-Year Review: Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

The Tundra 45 Hard Cooler was provided by Yeti for this review. Although I am allowed to keep this cooler after the conclusion of this review, it will not influence my opinion on any of their current or future products. Yeti has not been allowed to preview this article prior to its publication.  I have been using the Tundra 45 Hard Cooler for over a year at this point, and it has been used for beach trips in the Florida Panhandle, as well as accompanied me on a cross-country drive from Alabama to Maine. It’s been used to help cater many drinks at parties and, most importantly, keep all Trader Joe’s Orange Chicken cool from two-hour commutes home from the store.

Normally, this is where I would give you a brief history of the company, but I have already done that in a separate article you can find here: A History of YETI and Its Impact on the Cooler Market

What is the Yeti difference?

AllOutdoor 1-Year Review: Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

Most people are sticker shocked when they see the price of any Yeti cooler, so let’s just address this now. These coolers are often $300 to $1,300, depending on the model, and that’s largely because of their labor-intensive rotomolding process. This process molds thick polyethylene into a seamless, nearly indestructible shell that’s far more robust than the injection-molded plastics used in your traditional coolers. Rotomolding requires specialized machinery and skilled labor that drives up production costs. This is compounded by the premium PermaFrost insulation, a high-density polyurethane foam injected under pressure to achieve superior thickness and thermal efficiency. Yeti also has aggressive marketing that positions them as a luxury status symbol for outdoor enthusiasts, backed by decades of R&D from founders who tested prototypes against bears and extreme conditions.

My Experience with the Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

AllOutdoor 1-Year Review: Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

Over the last year, I have used this cooler for many trips and outdoor activities. I wish I could say I shot an elk at 300 yards with my crossbow and had to use my Tundra 45 to keep the meat cold while I packed it out on my back, but I’m simply not that cool. Like the vast majority of people who buy this cooler, I just used it to keep beer or sandwiches cold. Is this cooler amazing? Yes! Is it overkill for most situations? Absolutely. Is it still nice to have? You bet ya.

AllOutdoor 1-Year Review: Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

There are numerous Yeti Ice test videos online that will do a better job than I can at testing, so I will just like one Here. All I can tell you is it holds ice for as long as I have ever needed and keeps my items cold. The included rack works great for holding these items you want to keep cold, but don’t want to get wet from the melted ice at the bottom of the cooler. I also love that the rock is removable, movable, and stowable inside the cooler. There are so many things that this cooler does right, I could go on and on, so I think at this point it would make sense to talk about a few things it does poorly.

Things I Don’t Like

AllOutdoor 1-Year Review: Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

This cooler is heavy; there is no getting around that, but all that insulation has to go somewhere. Speaking of the insulation, it will eat up a good portion of the interior of the cooler. Again, the Insulation has to go somewhere, but every time I pack this cooler out, I’m left a little disappointed and thinking I had more space than I thought. I think it would be really cool if Yeti included a bottle opener on the inside of this cooler. I have seen them on cheaper coolers, and its a nice feature to have. Lastly, why is this called the 45 when it can really only hold up to 33 liters? This seems a bit misleading to me.

Likes

  • Superior Quality and Construction
  • Amazing 5 Year Warranty
  • Holds Ice for a few days
  • It will last for many years
  • Functional design elements with a basket and accessories

Dislikes

  • Named “45” but can actually only hold 33 liters
  • Heavy
  • Expensive (no getting around that one)
  • No bottle opener.

Wrap Up – Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

AllOutdoor 1-Year Review: Yeti Tundra 45 Hard Cooler

I feel that this review has felt largely negative, but my opinions on the Tundra 45 are really anything but. I have really enjoyed the utility and functionality this cooler brings to me when I’m on a long road trip or going to the beach for the day. Is it heavy? Sure. But it has to be to hold of that isolation to keep your IPAs cold. I do love some of the ingenuity in the rack system and the rain system. Overall, it’s a really solid product, and it’s easy to see why Yeti is where they are at in the outdoors or space.
